New family tree pages
Posted by Chris @ 7:52 pm
I've got fed up with the old phpGedView family tree pages I was using to show my family tree. Whilst it was OK, it was too complicated, buggy, produced loads of stupid results in Google, and 404s, and gave me too much spam mail from "people" signing up to view further details.
So what's the solution? Well Tony has been working on a family tree chart generator for his own GedCom file, and very kindly let me try out the alpha version. It needs refinement, for sure, but will do me just fine. It produces standalone files, has a chart for each person and is easy to use. Plus no 404s and stupid results or themes for Google to index. Sounds good to me, cheers Tony, looking forward to the next update!

Tony, I see you've failed to mention I pointed out this little faux pas to you! Quite how you and Anthony, both seasoned developers, managed to get it wrong on the same day is curious. And to dispell any doubt Google to the rescue...

This morning, I thought alpha was before beta. However, after reading his post I doubted myself.I just assumed that anyone in a position to criticise Microsoft would be correct...

Dear Christopher,Messing around as have broken wrist was amused to find that one of the entries for my name on Google is now on a family tree on your site. Also amused to see that it's now very much in the public domain that your Uncle has had three wives. Happy to provided photo if you'd like one but if you think you stand no chance of getting a date of birth out of me. Very best wishes to you... your 'black sheep' Aunt and author person Isabel (www.isabellosada.com)

Hi Isabel,Nice to hear from you, always interesting to find out who is coming across my blog and how. Glad the family tree is finding its way into Google, hopefully it will help out fellow family historians.
Had a quick read of your site, your occasional blog is interesting, means I can keep up to date with your world a little bit more now! Hope your wrist is better soon, take care, Chris

Christopher - Is it possible that Julia Riley - The first wife of Charles David Riley has now ceased to exist? This seems a trifle unfair as, when the parents of Mr Charles David met me (I was about 21 years old at the time) they were very keen on showing me photos of their beloved Julia who was first wife of Charles David for seven years before meeting me. Sorry to be difficult here but I've always been one for honesty and keeping the skeletons out of the cupboard. Also, as I'm the black sheep (wife?) of the family I feel obliged to live up to my reputation. :-) Happy New Year 2006. x isabel www.isabellosada.comThis comment posted by Anonymous

Happy new year to you too!It is a very fair comment you make about Julia being missed off the family tree. However as David produces the family tree and I only get it into web format I fear David may have had a hand in Juila's demise! You'll have to contact him to get that one sorted out. You're doing a good job of keeping up your reputation though! All the best to you and Emily, Chris x
