A tag cloud is good for search
Posted by Chris @ 12:36 pm
Whilst the whole tag cloud thing was meant to be a way of categorising and finding my posts automatically using fancy pants technology it has had a positive side effect. The tag cloud gets indexed in search engines, which means when someone searches for a particular phrase that is in the tag cloud, my site is normally up there with the rest - great! I can only assume this is because each tag is linked using the phrase as the link text, plus then clicking on the link in the search engine takes you to the page which shows my posts for that particular tag, which draws people into my site even deeper. Wicked.
So if you haven't got a means of tagging your posts or producing a tag cloud, I highly reccommend you try to get one sorted out, and if you can't be bothered I'm always happy to let you adapt my code to fit your site - for a link back to my site from your tag cloud of course!

Thanks Chris, for your insightful comment. On a related matter, you will see I have removed the ads from the homepage inbetween the posts, and instead stuck them at the bottom of the page - hope that appeases my regular readers.

Yeah, good one Riley, put them at the bottom where nobody will see them and therefore nobody will click them. I think you've missed the point of having the ads in the first place... :-PThis comment posted by Tony Ruscoe

We demand a high standard from a blog, especially yours!!Glad to see you have moved the ads to the post view page, much more appropriate (see I am kinda pleased).
Oh and tags, I thought the whole point was for helping search listings!?!?!?!
One suggestion, I dont see why you couldnt have a reduced list of tags on the footer of each post, like the do on engadget. That'll bost your rankings no end

Oh also....think you should look into .net custom controls, thats what I have been using to make this "words of the week" control and you should put your blog roll thing and tag cloud thing all in them so then you can share with the masses much more easilyThis comment posted by Anthony Main

What's the best joystick to be modding to become a custom control then? And what's the easiest way to add a usb drive to my joystick, to store the source code for my tag cloud and blogroll in? ;o)Seriously tho, you've well lost me, what's a .net control, a .net custom control, and how can it help me?

*sigh newbies !!!The difference between a web user control and a custom control is that the custom control doesn't have a web form. That means you can just drop it into ANY .net page.
You then have it render a div or just some text to the HTML stream, you can then just format it using the CSS.
This way you don't have to edit the page's code behind its all wrapped up in a little control, just like you would add any other .net control (i.e the text box or image)
