Track Playing
Posted by Chris @ 1:33 pm
If you were wondering why it has been quiet on this blog for a while, the reason, as always, is that I've been working on another website!
This one is called http://www.trackplaying.com - it displays information about the track currently playing on the radio.
It takes data from BBC Music (beta), Last.fm and Amazon, and is hosted on Google App Engine. Mashup heaven!
It is based on my previous attempt http://cgriley.com/nowplaying/ that some of you may recall - http://cgriley.com/2007/10/now-playing.aspx
As usual the best way to figure out what it is all about is to have a look, hope you all find it useful / of interest. Let me know what you think of it in the comments....

Very good, a useful website. As always, some suggested enhancements:
- It can be slow switching between stations, and if you're just flicking you can get confused as to which station the current info pertains to. Therefore, I'd recommend putting the title of the station at the top of the page.
- Often you get a row of identical images for the linked Amazon items (e.g. cd album, vinyl album, special edition vinyl album, special edition cd album). Therefore, it would be useful to have a text description below the image to avoid having to mouse over the images in turn to find out what's what.
- Radio 1 is for the retarded, hosted by the retarded (as evidenced by their GCSE results yesterday). That's not an issue with your website, more a general observation.
- Can you add Radio 3? I was listening to it yesterday, and there was a track playing I wanted to know more about and it took me ages to find out what it was. If it had been on this site, you might have made something like 10p off of me adding it to my Amazon shopping basket. Imagine that!

Looks good to me, agree with chris about having the text for the albums under the pictures, not just on rollover. Also, when entering a lastfm username, theres no confirmation that its worked, only if it's failed, which can be a little confusing if switching from one user to another. Also, the music on 1Xtra confuses me, and I think i'm supposed to be target audience, please fix this, thanks :).

Looks good. I like the transition effects, a nice touch. Think the design could do with a little work but is very functional.I dont know why but the 6music feed is completely wrong, I checked the RSS and it might as well be for a completely different station!

Yeah, there's a couple of CSS issues I still need to sort out, but they're low on my list of things to do as they seem to be odd browser specific things rather than general ones. This comment posted by Chris
